From October 29 to November 5, Jiang Min, Vice President of SHOU, visited the University of Tasmania (UTAS) in Australia and the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) in New Zealand on invitation, to promote and consolidate international exchanges and cooperation with them in the fields of scientific research and education.
Professor Rufus Black, President of UTAS, warmly welcomed the delegation on behalf of UTAS and highly praised the achievements of cooperation made by the two universities since 2002. He also expressed the hope that the two universities would deepen the cooperation in areas of common concern to cultivate more outstanding talents and enhance the international popularity and reputation.
Jiang Min thanked UTAS for their warm reception. As she pointed out, UTAS is an important strategic partner of SHOU, and the two Sino-foreign cooperative education programs between the two universities have achieved significant results in talent cultivation and have been widely praised for the high-quality student training. In recent years, SHOU has been working closely with UTAS in marine science, especially in the field of Antarctic marine living resources. Relying on the platform of UTAS, SHOU is currently exploring new paths to jointly train doctoral students with other cooperative institutions of UTAS, in order to cultivate young talents for research on the conservation of Antarctic marine living resources. The two universities have embarked on a new 20-year journey of cooperation and will further deepen cooperation in more fields and forms in the future.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the prospects of cooperation in areas such as talent cultivation and international scientific research, and renewed the agreement on student exchange. During the visit, Jiang Min was also invited to participate in the “SHOU Day” and was showed around the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (I-MAS). She had friendly exchanges with the representatives of SHOU students studying at UTAS and asked in detail about their living and studying conditions in Hobart, expressing the hope that everyone would cherish the opportunity to study hard and become useful talents.
The delegation also visited the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Marine and Atmospheric Research (CSIRO Marine), and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), an international management organization. They engaged in in-depth exchanges on cooperation in scientific research and education.
During their visit to NIWA in New Zealand, the delegation attended the kick-off meeting & first joint seminar on “Synergy between Fisheries and Climate Change in the Ross Sea Region of Antarctica” under the key project of “Intergovernmental International Scientific and Technological Innovation Cooperation” of the National Key R&D Program. This visit created a great opportunity for both parties to further consolidate their implementation plans and goals in scientific research cooperation, talent cultivation, and exchange, providing scientific support for China’s in-depth participation in Antarctic governance.
