Recently, South China Sea Seeps, a monograph on seeps in the South China Sea, has been published and distributed by the internationally renowned academic publishing group Springer Nature. This book is the first academic monograph on the South China Sea seeps system worldwide. It was mainly compiled by Professors Chen Duofu and Feng Dong of SHOU over many years, together with nearly 40 scholars from nearly 20 universities and research institutes at home and abroad, including the University of Hamburg, Hong Kong Baptist University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tongji University, and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The monograph, consisting of 14 chapters, offers a systematic review and summary of the research history, topography, geomorphology, and geophysical characteristics of the South China Sea seeps system; the composition and environmental adaptability of seeps biological communities; the biogeochemical processes and sedimentary records of the seeps system; the activity history of seeps and its relationship with the dynamic evolution of hydrates; the in-situ detection of the seeps system, etc. The publication and distribution of this book indicate that the Team’s work in the research field of South China Sea seeps has been recognized by the international academic community.
The concept of “seeps” was first introduced into China in 2002. After 20 years of efforts, research on South China Sea seeps has become an important component of China’s marine scientific research. The monograph is also a comprehensive display of the latest research results of South China Sea seeps on the international stage. The monograph was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Talent Plan, etc.
