Recently, the Shanghai Federation of Popular Science Education Bases has announced the list of “2019 Advanced Collective of Shanghai Popular Science Education Bases”. The Rainbowfish Deep-sea Science Popularization and Experience Base of the College of Marine Science of SHOU has been on the list.
The Rainbowfish Deep-sea Science Popularization and Experience Base of the Hadal Science and Technology Research Center (HAST) was first built in 2015, formally opened to the public free of charge in 2016, and approved as a Shanghai Popular Science Education Base in 2017. Starting with the practice of deep-sea exploration, the base has taken into account the latest research progress both at home and abroad (especially the prominent achievements of our country and our university), paid close attention to matters of public concerns, and popularized and publicized the knowledge about deep-sea exploration and the awareness of maritime rights and interests in a close-to-life manner.
Capable of receiving more than 20,000 visitors each year, the base has been widely praised since opening, and has become an important publicity window for SHOU. In addition, the base has also launched a series of brand activities, such as “Rainbowfish Family Tour”, “Rainbowfish in Communities”, “Ocean Lecture Hall”, and “11,000-meter We Run”. It has also become a routine for the teachers of the base to visit primary and middle schools, communities, enterprises, and public institutions in Shanghai, where they give deep sea-themed science popularization lectures, join live and recorded TV and broadcast shows, and publicize the knowledge about deep-sea exploration and the culture of SHOU. Xinmin Evening News once wrote that “Rainbowfish has become a well-known science popularization brand in Shanghai”.
