On the morning of September 12, SHOU held 2018 (Fall Semester) Opening Ceremony for International Students & Entrance Education for Freshmen in Room 137 of the Administrative Building, and welcomed more than 150 new and regular international students from 51 countries. SHOU President Cheng Yudong attended the ceremony, and delivered a speech. Also present at the ceremony were Wu Jiannong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of SHOU, Zhong Junsheng, Director of the International Exchange Office; Wang Xichang, Dean of the Graduate School; Luo Rukun, Director of Students’ Affairs Department; and the principals of related departments and the faculty of the College of International Cultural Exchanges. The ceremony was directed by You Luquan, Dean of the College of International Cultural Exchanges.
Cheng Yudong welcomed our international students on behalf of SHOU, introduced the long-standing history, preponderant disciplines and advancing international cooperation and exchange of SHOU to them, and encouraged them to study hard and cherish the golden days of overseas study in China. He also expressed the hope that every international student would play the role of “a goodwill ambassador” in promoting international exchange and cooperation and serve as new bridges for strengthening inter-state friendships.
Professor Li Chenhong from the College of Fisheries and Life Science gave a speech as teachers’ representative, and expressed his hope that all our international students would study assiduously and make a lot of friends here. He emphasized that, by providing a diversified cultural integration platform, SHOU wished that our students would be able to harvest both knowledge and friendship here.
Australia freshman (grade 2018) Amy, a major of aquaculture from the College of Fisheries and Life Science, spoke on behalf of the international students of grade 2018, and Ruan Shiyu from Vietnam acted as her interpreter. In her speech, Amy stressed the importance of finding a balance point in learning process, and said that everyone should be active, passionate and assiduous, as university courses would be very challenging.
Turkish grade-2016 student Urie, a major of clinical veterinary medicine from the College of Fisheries and Life Science, spoke on behalf of all international students in both Chinese and English. He said that learning and living in the big family of SHOU would be a new start for everyone wishing to step onto bigger stages, and expressed his wish that everyone would take an open mind to start a brand-new life in the multi-cultural communication environment.
At the end of the opening ceremony, the teachers of the College of International Cultural Exchanges and police officer Gu Liping from the Exit-Entry Administration Division of Shanghai Public Security Bureau explained relevant on-campus safety, teaching and legal publicity (including visa consultation) affairs to all international students. This opening ceremony & entrance education for freshmen helped our freshmen more quickly adapt to and plan their study and life in SHOU, and laid a solid basis for the future education of international students.
