Delegation of the Minister of Fisheries of Fiji Visiting SHOU

On the morning of September 27, Semi Koroilavesau,Minister of Fisheries of Fiji, paid a visit to SHOU together with Mohammed Ikhbal Akbar Jannif, Chairman of Pacific Fisheries Co., Ltd. and President of Fiji National University; Meli Raicebe, senior officer of the Ministry of Fisheries of Fiji; Aporosa Rabo, fisheries officer of the Ministry of Industry & Trade; and Du Xuejun, General Manager of Jinyang Co., Ltd. Wu Jiamin, Secretary of SHOU CPC Committee, and the principals and professors of related functional departments and colleges held a friendly meeting with our guests.

Wu Jiamin introduced the century-old history and preponderant disciplines of SHOU, the development and planning of SHOU since being elected as a 'Double First-class' university by the Ministry of Education, and our cooperation with Fiji. Semi Koroilavesau, Minister of Fisheries of Fiji, gave a brief introduction to the memorandum of understanding on fisheries about to be signed between the two governments, and expressed the expectation that such cooperation intention would introduce SHOU into this cooperation and launch the cooperation with SHOU in aquaculture and other fields. President of Fiji National University expressed the hope to cooperate with SHOU in the joint training of talents.

Du Xuejun said that SHOU began to participate in the fishery resources survey of Fiji in 1997, that the survey report prepared by professors Wang Yaogeng and Sun Manchang played a vital role in the decision-making of aquatic companies, and that the outstanding graduates of SHOU were very active in the aquatic field and had become backbones. He thanked SHOU for cultivating outstanding talents for the aquatic field, and expressed the hope to strengthen the cooperation with SHOU and provide outstanding talents.

At the end of the meeting, the delegation visited the Marine Fisheries Remote Sensing GIS Technology Lab of National Engineering Research Center for Oceanic Fisheries, and presented a field exercise of checking the information of fishing boats in nearby fisheries of Fiji. The delegation was also showed around the Recirculating Aquaculture Technology and Engineering Research Center, and the Minister expressed a strong interest and asked about some aquaculture-related details.

Located in the center of the southwest Pacific Ocean, the Republic of Fiji spans across the eastern and western hemispheres, and is the transportation hub of the southern Pacific Ocean region. It is rich in fishery resources, especially tuna. The friendly exchange history between SHOU and Fiji started in 2002. In 2002, Laisenia Qarase, Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji led a delegation of 60 persons, including his wife, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Minister of Commerce, entrepreneurs and journalists, and paid a visit to SHOU. In 2006, professor Song Liming from the College of Marine Science of SHOU paid a visit to the Ministry of Fisheries of Fiji, Fiji Fishing Port and the University of the South Pacific, and engaged in exchanges with them about cooperation in tuna longline research, tuna fishery resources survey, fisherman training and other aspects of marine fisheries. In 2012, the delegation led by professor Pan Yingjie, former President of SHOU, visited Fiji, and called on the University of the South Pacific, Jinyang Group’s fishery fleet branch, etc.
