Delegation Led by Vice Chairman of the University of the Azores Visiting SHOU

On April 4, a three-person delegation ledby Ms. Ana Teresa Alves, Vice Chairman of the University of the Azores,Portugal, paid a visit to SHOU, and held a meeting with SHOU President ChengYudong, VicePresident Li Jiale, and representatives andpersons in charge of the International Exchange Office, the Teaching AffairsOffice, the Science and Technology Office, the Graduate School, the Developmental Planning Office,etc.

Atthe meeting, ChengYudong first warmly welcomed the delegation of the University of the Azores. Hesaid that, in 2012, professor Adelino from the University of Algarve visitedSHOU for the first time, starting friendly relationship between the twouniversities. After five years of joint efforts, the Sino-PortugueseInternational Associated Laboratory for Marine Bioscience was formallyestablished in September 2017, and SHOU also successfully held the FirstSino-Portuguese Seminar on Marine Life. At present, SHOU and the University ofAlgarve carry out a diversified range of exchange activities, including studentexchange, scholar exchange, Erasmus program and so forth. Cooperation betweenthe two sides has received substantial support and close attention from thegovernments of the two countries, especially from their marine authorities. In2016, the delegation of SHOU visited the University of the Azores. In April2017, the two universities became friendly universities. Cheng Yudong addedthat, upon the tenth anniversary of the renaming of SHOU and its relocation tothe new campus in Lingang New City, this visit paid by the University of theAzores to SHOU would further strengthen the cooperative relationship betweenthe two universities. Ms. Ana Teresa Alves thanked SHOU for the invitation,congratulated us for ranking among the finalists of“Double First-Class”universities and high-level characteristic universities, and expressed the hopethat the two universities would achieve concerted progress and cooperativewin-win in international exchanges.

In the follow-up talk on cooperation, LiJiale introduced in details the Sino-Portuguese International AssociatedLaboratory for Marine Bioscience and the First Sino-Portuguese Seminar onMarine Life, and wished that the University of the Azores would join thecooperative platform of the Sino-Portuguese International Associated Laboratoryfor Marine Bioscience and assign scholars to the Second Sino-Portuguese Seminaron Marine Life to be held at the University of Algarve in September of thisyear, so as to jointly enhance the international influence of the internationalcooperative research platform. The two sides also engaged in in-depthdiscussions about cooperation in marine science, fishery and other fields,especially with regard to joint talent training and scientific research. AnaTeresa Alves said that they would organize and mobilize students to take partin the First International Summer School Program of SHOU in July, launch andimplement course docking initiatives in terms of credit transfer and accumulationfor exchange students, and carry out the joint training of undergraduate andgraduate students.

On the afternoon of April 4, professorHelder Silva, Director of the Department of Oceanography and Aquaculture andAdvisor to the Chairman on Marine Research, presented an academic reportentitled “Ocean Studies in the Azores” in the Lecture Hall A101 of the Collegeof Fisheries and Life Science to the teachers and students of SHOU, andintroduced in details the marine researches, scientific research programs,long-term fishery detection and management programs and other researchescarried out in the Region of Azores Islands. In the discussion link, theChinese and foreign teachers and students of SHOU engaged in a heateddiscussion with professor Helder Silva about academic issues.

On the very day of the visit, thedelegation of the University of the Azores also visited the Marine FisheryRemote Sensing & GIS Technology Laboratory, theSino-Portuguese International Associated Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, the Hadal Science andTechnology Research Center (HAST) and the “Songhang” training ship of SHOU.
