The 2015 Tuna Fishery Performance Workshop, sponsored by China Deep-sea Fishing Association, and jointly organized by China Deep-sea Fishery Engineering and Technological Research Center, Shanghai Ocean University, Deep-sea Fishing Training Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Observatory and Experimental Station for Oceanic Fishery Resources and Environmental Science of the Ministry of Agriculture, was held in SHOU fromDecember 29-30, 2015. 105 captains or “persons-in-charge” from over 40 tuna fishing enterprises attended the workshop. With the development of tuna fisheriesand change of resources, international management of tuna fishing is becoming more stringent, andthe Chinese tuna fishing businesses have a long way to go in terms of performing their international obligations and responsibilities as required by the international organizations. The workshop aimed to improvethe performance ability of the Chinese tuna fishing industry, and promote the sustainable development of the oceanic tuna fishing industry.
7 experts from the Fishery Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, China Deep-sea Fishing Association, and Shanghai Ocean University were invited to give the lecture. Wan Chen, deputy director of the Deep-sea Fishing Section, Fishery Department, MOA, reported on Overview of China’s Management of Deep-sea Fishery and International Tuna Fishing Industry.Zhao Gang, director of Tuna Work Team and vice secretary general of China Deep-sea Fishing Association, reported on Performance Trend of Tuna Organization, Problems Facing China and Follow-up Work.
Chen Yong, tenured professor of the University of Maine and special term professor of Shanghai Ocean University, reported on “Analysis of the Role of Scientific Research in International Fishery Management”.Shark expert Shelly Clark from the Secretariat of WCPFC and Peter Williams, director of Tuna Data Section of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community respectively reported on “Maintenance and Management Measures for Such Catches as Sharks, Sea Birds and Sea Turtles”and “Trend for Management of Data Submission, Electronic Supervision and E-reporting”.
Prof. Huang Shuoling, dean of Research Institute of Marine Science, SHOU and Prof. Dai Xiaojiefrom theCollege of Marine Science respectively reported on “Opportunities and Challenges facing Development of China’s Deep-sea Fishing Industry – International Legal Environment and Management Trend” and China Tuna Data Performance Status and Challenges. Additionally, the working staff of Tuna Work Team of China Deep-sea Fishing Association elaborated on tuna transshipment in the high sea, ship monitoring systems, boarding inspection in the high sea and data submission. Students had heated discussions of those lectures, and enjoyed an effective training.
