Our University Undertook the Second East Asian Island and Ocean Forum

On October 9, the Second East Asian Island and Ocean Forum themed on Island and Ocean Culture and Social Development in East Asia was held in Meeting Room 102 in the Graphics and Text Information Building. The forum was jointly undertaken by our university, Zhejiang Ocean University and the Museum of Overseas Communications History, Quanzhou. Over 50 scholars from Kagoshima University (Japan), Mokpo National University and Inha University (Korea), National Taiwan Ocean University, Shanghai Ocean University, Zhejiang Ocean University and Museum of Overseas Communications History, Quanzhou participated in the forum. Vice President Huang Shuolin gave awelcoming speech. Professor Han Xingyong presided over the opening ceremony.


Founded and prepared in 2012, the First East Asian Island and Ocean Forum (EAIOF) was held in Kagoshima University in 2013. It devotes itself to the discussions and exchanges of East Asian island and ocean culture and ecological environment. This forum consisted of 4 sessions, which were separately hosted by Professor Ye Jun (former CPC Party Secretary of the university), Professor Wang Ying (Zhejiang Ocean University), Professor Noda Shinichi (Kagoshima University) and Professor Hong Seok-Joon (Mokpo National University).

The participating scholars had interpreted and analyzed island and ocean culture from different angles in terms of history, cultural anthropology, archeology, tourism science, sociology and ecology, highlighting the important status and role in the development of ocean and reflecting the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary properties of island research.

Teachers of our university, Zheng Jianming, Li Qianghua, Qi Pei, Lou Lan, Chen Cheng, Guo Qian and Chen Ye made reports in Chinese, English or Japanese in the forum, namely System Analysis and Route Selection of the Development of Urban Ocean Culture Industry - Based on the Case Analysis of Nantong, Evolution of the Concept of Sea Power in Modern China - Investigation Centered on the Introduction of 'Public Law of Nations', East Asia as 'Approach' - On Bai Shilong's Empire of the Seas: How to Reflect on Asia, On the Development Process and Historical Lessons of Nantong Ocean Culture Industry, Fictions about Sea and the Sea of Fictions - On Both 'Fictions and Sea', Analysis of Strategic Advantages of the Ocean Development in Shanghai under the Diversified Urban Culture, and Shanghai: From Little Fishing Village to Metropolis.

After the symposium was over, a meeting of the council of East Asian Island and Ocean Culture Forum was held to report the achievements made in the first forum in 2013 and make a working plan for the next stage. Professor Ye Jun made concluding remarks, hoping that all parties would strengthen the cooperation with each other to realize more research achievements.Afterwards, some participating scholars went to Zhejiang Ocean University and Museum of Overseas Communications HistoryQuanzhou for study and exchange.
