Abstract:The production of fish in intensive systems is frequently associated with an increase in the incidence of malformations of skeletal origin. The aetiology of skeletal malformations is not very well established but a cursory glance at the literature suggests it is multifactorial. The concern about skeletal malformations are several fold: i) they may reduce sustainability by affecting marketability and productivity; ii) they are indicative of an inadequate production regime; iii) they may reduce animal fitness and therefore increase susceptibility to disease, and iv) are considered an animal welfare issue. Although empirical improvements in hatchery procedures and nutrition have reduced the incidence of malformations there can be periodic, unexpected and unexplained increases in the incidence of malformation in aquaculture. Studies directed at understanding the mechanisms underlying skeletal development and the way in which biotic and abiotic factors influence development and homeostasis should contribute to understand the molecular basis of malformations. Recently insight was gained into the way that long term modifications in dietary calcium and phosphorus affect the vertebra by using SuperSAGE (Serial Analysis Gene Expression).
