报告题目:“How barnacles settle gregariously?”

主题摘要:Many documented examples show that free-living larvae of sessile marine organisms do not settle at random but exercise a choice of habitat by delaying metamorphosis until suitable conditions are encountered. For barnacles that are obligate cross fertilizers, potential partners need to be within the range of the extensible penis of the 'acting male' for fertilization to occur. As the adult is sessile, proximity is achieved at the settling stage larva, cyprid, through gregarious settlement. Several environmental factors influence larval settlement behavior. Of these, chemical cues from conspecific barnacles are believed to induce settlement of cyprid larvae and to contribute to their gregarious settlement. We isolated two proteinaceous settlement pheromones in the cosmopolitan barnacle, Balanus amphitrite. On the other hand, our recent study suggests that larval vision also contributes to barnacle gregarious settlement. Chemical and visual signals are thought to play important roles in selection of settlement site during larval settlement in barnacles. These studies may contribute not only to understanding of marine lives and ecosystem but also to development of environmentally benign anti-fouling technology. In this seminar, I will introduce my previous and recent works on molecular mechanisms of environmental signal perception in barnacle larvae during settlement.
